Every job a solved problem.

Five completed projects presented as case studies — residential pruning through to emergency storm response and municipal compliance. Each case escalates in complexity. Each ends with a measurable result.

Heritage Oak Crown Reduction

The Problem

A 90-year-old English oak in a Heritage Protection Overlay Zone had developed a 14-metre co-dominant stem over a Victorian outbuilding. The owner faced a potential heritage violation if the tree failed — and a criminal charge if they removed it without City Arborist sign-off.

Method

Structural assessment using the Helliwell System for tree valuation as required by the City of Cape Town. Permit application supported by a full ISA arborist report. Selective crown reduction of the co-dominant stem only — 2.3 tonnes of material removed using aerial rigging to protect the slate roof below.

Result

Heritage permit granted within 11 working days. Crown reduction completed in a single day. Structural integrity confirmed by follow-up report. Zero contact with the building envelope. All material chipped on-site and removed for municipal green waste.

30m Bluegum in Confined Garden

The Problem

A 30-metre Eucalyptus globulus (blue gum) — listed as an Invasive Alien Species under NEMBA — was growing 4 metres from a retaining wall on a sloped Camps Bay property. The garden offered no drop zone. The wall, if cracked, would require R180,000 in structural repair.

Method

Full sectional dismantling from the crown down. Sections cut to 800kg maximum per lift. Hand-rigged to a single anchor point on the boundary wall pier — the only load-bearing structure available. Stump ground flush with grade on the same day. NEMBA compliance documentation issued to the homeowner.

Result

Tree fully removed in 7 hours. Retaining wall undamaged — crack survey conducted before and after. Stump ground to 300mm below grade. Root zone treated to prevent coppice regrowth per NEMBA Category 1A requirements. Property cleared and raked by 16h00.

Post-Southeaster Port Jackson Collapse

The Problem

A southeaster event brought a mature Port Jackson (Acacia saligna, NEMBA Category 1A) through the roof of a double-storey in Constantia. The insurer required a certified arborist report within 72 hours for the claim. The tree was still partially suspended — a secondary collapse risk to the structural repairs team.

Method

Emergency site attendance within 4 hours of call. Hazard assessment and temporary support rigging to stabilise the suspended section before the structural repair crew could enter the roof space. ISA-certified arborist report documenting species, condition at time of failure, root morphology, and proximate cause — all required for the insurer's claim processing.

Result

Suspended section safely lowered and cleared within 2 hours. Certified arborist report delivered within 24 hours. Insurance claim processed without dispute. Remaining root system treated and documented per NEMBA requirements. Homeowner provided with a compliant clearance certificate.

Alien Invasive Clearing — Body Corporate

The Problem

A Century City body corporate received a compliance notice from the City of Cape Town requiring removal of 23 Port Jackson and 7 Rooikrans specimens from the common property boundary. Failure to comply within 60 days would result in the City contracting the work at the body corporate's expense — at municipal rates.

Method

Full species survey and NEMBA compliance plan submitted to the City within 5 working days. Phased clearing programme over 3 days: mechanical felling, stump treatment with herbicide to prevent coppice regrowth, seed bank management documentation. All material chipped and removed. Photographic compliance record prepared for City submission.

Result

All 30 specimens removed and treated within the 60-day compliance window. Compliance certificate issued to the body corporate. Ongoing monitoring schedule established — Port Jackson creates seed banks lasting 70–100 years, requiring annual follow-up surveys. Body corporate avoided an estimated R95,000 in municipal contractor costs.

Heritage Estate Annual Risk Programme

The Problem

A Constantia wine estate with 14 heritage-listed trees — including three Moreton Bay figs over 100 years old — required an annual structural risk assessment programme. The Shot-Hole Borer beetle had been detected in two adjacent properties. Any loss of a heritage tree would require City Arborist notification and potential criminal liability under the National Heritage Resources Act.

Method

Annual ISA-certified arborist inspection of all 14 heritage specimens. Helliwell System valuations updated for insurance purposes. Shot-Hole Borer detection protocol implemented — bore hole mapping, frass sampling, and treatment recommendations. Structural pruning of two Moreton Bay figs to reduce wind sail ahead of southeaster season. Full written report with photographic record delivered.

Result

Shot-Hole Borer detected and contained in one specimen — early intervention prevented spread to the heritage fig stand. Insurance valuations updated: combined Helliwell value of the 14 trees assessed at R2.4 million. Structural pruning reduced wind load by an estimated 35%. Estate now holds a 5-year arborist inspection record — a requirement for heritage permit applications.

Insurance schedule updated
01/04
Canopy assessed three heritage oaks on our estate before the southeaster season. The Helliwell valuations they provided updated our insurance schedule by R800,000. When one of the oaks shed a major limb in August, the insurer accepted the arborist report without a single query.
